Raul quit college a few credits from graduating and left promising careers as an author specializing in Chicano political history, an attorney specializing in civil rights law, and as a greasy ass politician grifting under the table untraceable local tax funds geared toward the east L.A. subway…all to join Ozomatli.
Did You Know:
1. He used to dance to the Jackson 5 for change at family and neighborhood functions and afterward would stroll to the local corner market for candy and soda. To this day he has severe tooth decay.
2. His childhood home was the background and set location for numerous TV and movie scenes. Including, Boulevard Nights featuring accomplished Chicano thespian Danny De La Paz; Mi Familia featuring all-purpose brown guy Jimmy Smits; the 70’s brainwashing staple the Rockford Files, with that guy who used to be in movies when he was young; and, Policewoman featuring my Dad’s favorite Angie Dickenson. AND the one that got the whole neighborhood: CHiP’s featuring Eric Estrada of Dos Mujers, Un Camino, and Spanish TV infomercial fame.
Career Highlight: At the age of 9 won 1st place in his division of the Salvation Army Christian Summer Camp Moto-Cross finals. These classic battles took place in a concrete parking lot where Raul flipped on a parking block soon after crossing the finish line effectively ending the races due to insurance concerns. To this day he is sorry for ruining it for everybody else.
